PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's basketball team suffered an Atlantic 10 opening defeat on Thursday evening despite a career-night from Clifton Moore, falling to Fordham 69-61 inside Tom Gola Arena.
The Explorers drop to 5-6 (0-1 A-10) on the season, Fordham moving to 8-5 (1-0 A-10).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Explorers forced Fordham into four misses to start the game, Moore taking advantage on the opposite end with five straight points for the Explorers to take an early 5-0 lead.
- Despite the early lead, the visitors were able to trim the deficit and exchange punches with the Explorers. Fordham took its first lead with under 12 in the half, Chuba Ohams finishing an alley-oop from Antrell Charlton to put the Bronx side ahead.
- A pair of threes from Matt McFarlane and Josh Nickelberry sandwiching a mid-range jumper from Khalil Brantley kept the hosts within range, but the Rams shooting kept the Explorers at bay with a 21-17 advantage at the U8 media timeout.
- Four straight points from Moore and a clever up-and-under from Mamadou Doucoure reestablished the Explorer lead at 23-21 with just over five minutes to play. Moore once again rippled the net, hitting a triple to extend the lead to five. The redshirt senior was previously 1-11 from beyond the arc on the season.
- Answering a 5-0 run from the Rams, the Explorers used two newcomers to extend their lead back to five, a deuce from McFarlane and a triple from Khalil Brantley giving La Salle a 31-26 lead at the break.
- Moore started the second half where he left off the first, scoring the first four points for the Explorers, including an alley-oop off a Jhamir Brickus steal and lob that gave him a new career-mark of 16 points. The defense followed suit, forcing a stop before a Jack Clark put-back dunk gave La Salle an 11-0 run on both sides of the break.
- The Explorer offense cooled, allowing Fordham to get hot and use a 23-5 run in just under seven minutes to take a double-digit lead of 58-47 with five minutes left in the game.
- La Salle scraped back into it, able to cut the deficit to as little as five. But the Rams proved their mettle from the free throw line to hold off a late comeback bid, walking out of Gola with a 69-61 win.
