From the largest explorer yacht of all time to an Italian ice class, 2021 has seen the delivery of numerous marvellous explorer yachts; we take you on a whistle-stop tour of some of our favourites...
Flexplorer
Cantiere delle Marche demonstrate its pioneering approach once again with the delivery of the Flexplorer 146. She is built with comfort and efficiency in mind when tackling rough seas due to her low-resistance underbody and bulbous bow. Despite measuring up at 44.33m, the Flexplorer 146 shows off her size in other ways as she has the largest volume while still remaining under the 500GT threshold. She was snapped off the market by a lucky buyer who can enjoy her ample features including special cold plunge pool on the stern terrace as they requested.
Lady Lene
Though Lady Lene is one of the smallest explorer yachts launched in 2021, we feel it would be remiss of us not to talk about the advantages of having a smaller explorer vessel. Her wave-piercing bow not only aids the panoramic views on offer but also increases performance and helps with fuel saving. The Van der Valk motor yacht's explorer capabilities are backed-up by her performance-enhancing Hull Vane appendage. Her elegant design should not go without note as her 10 guests can cruise into unchartered territory in total luxury.
Polaris
The 70m Italian build is one of the most special yachts to touch the waters this year. Formerly known as Project King Shark she is the the largest ever superyacht built by Rossinavi and is capable of cruising through extreme ice conditions. After launching in January she debuted later in the year at the Monaco Yacht Show and impressed many attendees. Her specification enables her to easily transition from the warm waters of the Caribbean to sub-zero conditions of the polar areas. Adventure junkies were enamoured by her delivery as it is packed out with engineering solutions that make her a truly global yacht, perhaps most notably a satellite dynamic system to facilitate the positioning for dynamic anchoring wherever it is needed, even in extreme weather scenarios.
Solaris
As the largest explorer in the world Solaris wowed yacht enthusiasts for her colossal size of 140m. Built by Lloyd Werft, she is by far the biggest luxury explorer yacht cruising the waters to date. Featuring over 2,000 square metres of glass and the largest ABB Azipod® system ever installed on a superyacht, her delivery in Bremerhaven marked a series of industry 'firsts'. Since the launch of Luna over a decade ago, such a feat in engineering in the creation of exploration megayachts have not been achieved and as such she will go down in history setting a new bar for future yachtbuilders.
Victorious
After an extraordinary 14 year journey, Victorious was finally deliverd in Turkey this summer. Her capacity to circumnavigate the planet is inherently incredible, however, what really stands out about her is her long journey in construction. Orginally initiated in the Chilean shipyard Marco Yachts before heading to New Zealand along the way, thanks to her owner Graeme Hart's ambitious decision to rescue the incomplete construction before new owner Vural Ak set up his own shipyard AK Yachts through which her build would eventually be completed.
