Areas of South Dakota and Colorado had more than a foot of snowfall into Wednesday morning, with Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas not far behind.
South Dakota had more than 14 inches in some areas, while Colorado had about 13 inches. Wyoming and Nebraska each had about 11. Parts of Kansas saw about 8.5 inches.
More than 17,000 customers were without power in North Dakota early Wednesday, according to poweroutage.us.
Additional snow accumulation was unexpected, other than a couple of inches in spots.
"A small chance for lingering light snow lasts through Thursday with the concentration of isolated showers to the west," The National Weather Service in Hastings, Nebraska, said on social media. "A gradual warming this week will be undercut later in the week with a small drop of temperatures Sunday."
Weather alerts in the region were beginning to expire Wednesday morning, but gusty winds are expected to continue to blow and drift the snow around from South Dakota to Nebraska, western Kansas, Wyoming and Colorado.
Winds in Colorado were gusting up to 71 mph. North and South Dakota were seeing gusts in 67 and 63 mph, respectively.
Up to half an inch of ice is coating trees and power lines from Minnesota to North Dakota.
Heavy rain is expected in Washington, D.C., Wednesday morning and in New York City in the afternoon.
