A surfer was on the wrong end of a shark attack in California, suffering 'major injuries to his stomach and leg' on Wednesday morning.
The man, who remains unidentified for the time being, was bitten at Lovers Point Beach in Monterrey Bay, California, which is an hour-and-a-half drive south of San Francisco.
He was immediately rushed to Natividad Medical Center — the closest hospital to the beach even though it's 23 miles away from the shore. The attack took place at around 11 a.m.
It remains unclear if the man was attacked while he doing some sort of water activity or if the shark attacked while he was only swimming.
Jenny McAdams - a council member for the city of Pacific Grove shared a statement on Facebook: 'The surfer’s condition is unknown at this time. After the attack, the shark was seen again in the area.'
'The beach has been closed, with everyone ordered out of the water. I will share updates as they become available,' she added.
The beaches in the area will be closed for the next 48 hours, the Monterey Herald reports.
Rhonda Navarrol, who witnessed the attack, told CBS affiliate KION-TV that the shark was visible from above the water but that she couldn't recognize which type it was.
A press release will take place later today, as more updates are expected.
As of June 22, there have been 10 shark attack bites in the US this year, according to Tracking Sharks.
Nearly all of them occurred in Florida, except one, which took place in California.
None of them were considered as provoked and no deaths have been reported in relation to the amount of shark attacks this year.
If a person encounters a shark in the water, then they are advised to stay and still and not to swim away from it.
If the shark does start an attack, then it's advised to punch it as hard as one can in the nose due to their sensitivity. In most cases, it will drive the shark away.
If the shark is just circling around someone with no immediate threat, then it's advised to just stand still and to observe until it swims away.
