There is a fair warning about the upcoming Ford Explorer EV that’s straight from the top. Ford CEO Jim Farley warns that traditional fans might not like the way the 2024 Ford Explorer EV will look, making us obsess over what’s coming next.
The 2024 Ford Explorer EV will look different
It’s possible that the current Ford Explorer that you know and love will undergo significant changes. We know that the Ford Explorer EV is on the way, but now we’re a little concerned about how it will look.
The current Ford EV plan is focused on the brand’s most iconic vehicles and commercial options. Jim Farley shared that these new electric vehicles won’t be based on the existing gas-powered models. They will look pretty different from their internal-combustion engine siblings.
The electric Ford Explorer could be the first model we see with a totally different look. According to Ford Authority, while speaking at the 2022 Berstein Strategic Decision Conference, Farley shared that customers may not like the all-electric vehicles that are in the works.
Farley explained that when it comes to the EV business, you have to diversify your electric vehicles from the traditional ICE style. To achieve top engineering, Tesla has shown that you need to approach the creation of a product through a conquest methodology.
You need to over-invest in electric architecture and embedded systems to craft its look, design, and digital experience. This could be uncomfortable for current Ford Explorer fans.
What to expect with the Explorer EV?
We’re still waiting to learn more about the Ford Explorer EV, but we do know that it could arrive soon. Farley first shared that the Explorer EV was in development over a year ago. Then the Lincoln Aviator EV was pushed back from 2023 to 2024.
Reportedly, the delay could be due to changing production plants. The Explorer EV will be built at the Oakville Assembly plant in Canada instead of at the Cuautitlan plant in Mexico.
The 2024 Explorer EV and Aviator EV will also be produced at the Chicago Assembly plant, where the ICE-powered models are built. This move will allow the Mexican plant to increase Ford Mustang Mach-E production.
Also, the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator EVs are expected to be twins. They could share the same platform and powertrain options. However, the Aviator will be quite luxurious compared to the Explorer.
What’s new for the ICE Explorer?
While we wait for the Ford Explorer EV to come out, we can still check out updates for the gas-powered models. The 2023 Ford Explorer is due for a mid-cycle refresh. It could have a revised face and rear end.
Plus, the updated Explorer could arrive with fresh shades of paint, new headlights, and unique wheel designs. The interior layout could receive a few teaks to feel modern and fresh. Also, new tech could become available.
We wouldn’t mind if the 8.0-inch and optional 10.1-inch screens were updated. Also, we hope the Explorer gains wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
But we have to wait to learn more. Stay tuned for the latest Ford Explorer updates. Don’t be alarmed if the Explorer EV has a wildly different look.
