PHILADELPHIA - La Salle lacrosse outscored Manhattan 5-1 in the fourth quarter, but the Jaspers held on to beat the Explorers 10-8 on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.

Tori Rolon led the Explorer offense with four goals, while Emily Johnston added three. For Manhattan, Grace Lipponer led the way with four points on three goals and an assist, giving her 17 goals and 12 assists through just five games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Rolon and the Explorers got off to a fast start, scoring just 25 seconds into the game to give La Salle an early advantage.
  • The Jaspers responded with a 4-1 run to end the period, as Johnston and Lipponer traded goals for each side before Jillian Reiner, Reagan Mullins, Meghan Rodino all scored for Manhattan to take a 4-2 lead at the end of the first.
  • Rolon again started the La Salle offense in the second quarter, scoring at the 10:06 mark as La Salle got within a goal, 4-3.
  • However, the Jaspers rattled off three-consecutive goals to end the period, including a goal with just 0.2 seconds remaining in the first half from Mullins to give Manhattan a 7-3 lead at the break.
  • The Explorer offense was shut down in the third quarter, as La Salle failed to score on five shots in the period.
  • The Jaspers got goals from Lipponer and Ashley Bonitch to extend their lead to a game-high six at the end of the third quarter, taking a 9-3 lead into the fourth.
  • After being bogged down in the third, the Explorer offense came roaring to life in the fourth– two goals from Rolon and one from Johnston in a span of 1:48 brought La Salle within three, 9-6 with 9:08 remaining in regulation.
  • The Jaspers bounced back with a goal by freshman Olivia Cruthers at 8:13, restoring Manhattan's lead to four.
  • Maddie Dachowski scored on oa feed from Erin Welsh with 4:29 remaining to get within three, and Johnston completed her hat trick with 1:04 to play to bring La Salle within two, 10-8.
  • Manhattan's Clare McCooe iced the game by securing her ninth draw control of the game with the shot clock turned off allowing the Jaspers to run down the clock to zeros.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Saturday's performance marked the fifth-consecutive multi-goal game for Johnston, and the third hat trick of the season for the fifth-year senior through six games. Her 14 goals and 16 points both led her squad, as do her 14 ground balls and 14 draw controls.
  • Rolon's four-goal outing marked the fourth multi-goal performance of the season for the junior, and her second game with at least four goals after scoring five in La Salle's season opener against Iona.
  • For the fifth-consecutive game, Julia Dellaratta and Kelli McGroarty split time in goal, allowing a combined 10 goals while making nine saves.
