In Massachusetts, more than 81,000 utility customers are now without power on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, according to Eversource and National Grid outage maps. Eversource provides electricity to the Cape and Vineyard, while National Grid covers Nantucket.

Those figures represent the bulk of the outages across Massachusetts, a tally influenced by the strong winds and heavy snow hammering the region. While nearly all of Provincetown’s 5,974 customers remain without power, larger communities on the Cape are also feeling the brunt of the storm’s effects, with 17,257 outages reported in Barnstable and 12,460 in Falmouth, according to Eversource.

At a news conference on Friday, Eversource officials said they had hundreds of crews ready to respond in the region but warned residents that it could be days before power is fully restored.

Brian Sullivan, the company’s electric operations manager, said the company addresses the largest outages first to get the “biggest bang for the buck.”

In addition, crews prioritize power restoration to critical infrastructure, such as hospitals, police stations and fire stations, according to Eversource spokesman Christopher McKinnon.

More than 600 line crews, more than 200 tree crews and more than 200 troubleshooters have been called in to help, Mr. McKinnon said.

The crews, which come from as far away as Florida, will typically work 18 hours on and six hours off, said Mr. Sullivan, who didn’t anticipate getting a lot of sleep during the storm. “But we’re used to it,” he said.

Sullivan said the crews are sometimes forced to wait until power is cut to an area before they can get to work and warned residents to stay away from downed lines because it is difficult to differentiate between power lines and phone lines. The crews will not go up in the bucket trucks when it is unsafe to do so, such as when there are strong winds present, Mr. Sullivan and Mr. McKinnon said.

“Just give our crews space, let them get the work done and be safe,” Mr. Sullivan said.

As of noon on Saturday, a wind gust of 72 miles per hour was reported in the town of Chatham, on Cape Cod, and a gust of 74 m.p.h. was reported on Nantucket, according to the National Weather Service. Gusts between 45 m.p.h. and 70 m.p.h. were reported across other areas of the Cape and islands.

Snow has also begun to pile up, with eight inches in Harwich on Cape Cod, with drifts to more than a foot.
