The body of missing University of Alabama student Garrett Walker was recovered Tuesday afternoon following a two-day search in the Black Warrior River.
“Our University of Alabama community is heartbroken by the loss of our student, Garrett Walker,” said Stuart R. Bell, president of The University of Alabama.
“Our prayers and deepest sympathy are with his family, friends and loved ones as we mourn his passing. The UA counseling center is available for those affected by the mournful news of his passing.”
The 20-year-old junior was last seen about 1:15 a.m. Sunday at the Gray Lady on Greensboro Avenue in Tuscaloosa.
His cell phone was found Sunday afternoon at the Riverwalk.
Tuscaloosa police officials said they received an official missing person report Sunday afternoon.
Tuscaloosa and University of Alabama police officers have been searching for Walker, who is from Maryland, since Sunday morning.
Police spokeswoman Stephanie Taylor said clothing items believed to belong to Walker were found in the Black Warrior River, about a half mile from where he was last seen.
Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue and Tuscaloosa police had been searching the Black Warrior River since then.
The search went on until about 9:30 p.m. Monday and resumed at daylight Tuesday.
Police officials had said they were almost certain Walker was in the water. They have not said whether they suspect any foul play in his disappearance.
The discovery was made about 4 p.m. and Walker’s family then notified. Family and friends have been at the search site.
A GoFundMe launched to help raise money for a reward to offer for information in his disappearance had raised more than $35,000 as of Tuesday evening. That money will now be used toward a scholarship in his name.
Walker’s family is devastated by the announcement, according to a statement on behalf of the family from attorney Josh Hayes.
“We remember Garrett as a young man of faith,” said his mother, Debbie Walker. “We were so proud of him. He was dedicated to his faith and his friends, he loved to learn, and was so excited about studying at the University of Alabama.”
Walker was a Junior Aerospace Engineering Student at UA. A private pilot with significant aviation experience, Walker selected the University of Alabama to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps as an engineer.
“He was proud to be a student here and to was eager to make his mark in the world,” said Andrew Walker, his father. “Our son was an exceptional young man. There are no words to describe our loss.”
Walker’s large family includes his two twin brothers and a sister. They are now planning Garrett’s funeral.
“Andrew and Debbie thank the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Fire and Rescue divers, the University of Alabama community and everyone who engaged in the search for their son,’' Hayes said in the statement. “ A GoFundMe page has been established by the family in order to endow a scholarship honoring Garrett’s life. They now ask for privacy as they grieve.”
