Trump tweets support of HHS secretary's call to reopen US economy - New York Post

President Trump on Monday gave an emphatic “Yes!” to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar saying in an interview that reopening the economy is not dependent on having a vaccine for the coronavirus and that keeping businesses shuttered creates its own health crisis.

The president issued a one-word tweet — “Yes!” — linking to Azar’s Sunday interview on CNN and followed it up with two more messages: “REOPEN OUR COUNTRY!” and “TRANSITION TO GREATNESS.”

Azar backed Trump’s desire to get the country back to business during appearances on CNN and CBS.

He cautioned that there should not be a “one-size-fits-all approach to reopening, but reopen we must, because it’s not health versus the economy. It’s actually health versus health. There are serious health consequences to keeping us shut down, whether it’s suicidality rates or if it is cardiac procedures not being received, cancer screenings, [or] pediatric vaccinations declining. All of these are critical health needs that are part of reopening the economy,” Azar said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Azar also reiterated Trump’s remarks from last Friday when he said “vaccine or no vaccine, we’re back” during a news conference at the White House announcing “Operation Warp Speed” to develop a vaccine.

“So what the president was making the point on is — everything does not depend on a vaccine. We’re committed to delivering a vaccine, we’ll put the full power of the US government and our private sector towards getting a vaccine, but that’s one of a multi-factorial response program,” Azar said on CNN.

“First is the testing that we talked about before, test symptomatic people, broad surveillance to find cases, surge and to contain. Also therapeutics,” he continued.

In an interview with CBS News, Azar said the Trump administration was shooting for a goal of having 300 million doses of a coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year.

“It’s not a pledge, it’s a goal of what we’re going to mobilize the entire US government and private sector to achieve,” Azar said on “Face the Nation.”

The timeline contrasts with the view from Dr. Anthony Fauci, an infectious disease expert on the White House coronavirus task force, who said developing a vaccine could take up to 18 months.

Azar explained how the administration would reach that goal so quickly.

“What we’re doing is wringing the inefficiency out of the development process to make the development side faster to get to a safe and effective vaccine,” Azar said. “And at the same time, we’re going to scale up commercial-sized manufacturing to produce hundreds of millions of doses at risk. They may not pan out. They might not prove to be safe and effective, but we’ll have it so we can begin administration right away.”
