Blaze triggers sirens in fire-weary West Maui; evacuations since lifted - Hawaii News Now

KAANAPALI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Warning sirens blared in West Maui on Saturday afternoon as fire-weary communities grappled with a new brush fire — and fears about the ongoing fire risk.

The sires alerted those in the area to leave as firefighters doused a blaze in Kaanapali.

Firefighters remained on scene into the night and said the blaze is about 85% contained.

So far, about seven acres have burned.

Evacuations were ordered about 1:45 p.m. for residents from Anapuni Loop to West Mahipulu Place and lifted by about 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, HECO said the blaze knocked out power to at least 700 customers.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The incident played out just a mile away from fire-ravaged Lahaina.

As the sirens sounded, scores of community members were at the Lahaina Civic Center for a resource fair aimed at connecting impacted residents with key support services.

Resident and business owner Tanna Swanson was speaking with HNN as firefighters worked to fight the flames, located near the Kaanapali Golf Estates.

Minutes after the fire started, authorities issued an evacuation order and sirens sounded.

“Oh gosh!” Swanson exclaimed, as the sirens went off.

Kaanapali resident Nate Grahm, who owns a bike shop, also heard the warning sirens.

“As I was working in the shop, I heard a bunch of police cars and fire trucks come up here,” he said. “So of course I came up here to check it out and saw a big plume of white smoke.”

The fire was under control within a few hours.

But for thousands of residents on edge, the experience was traumatizing — added stress they didn’t need in the wake of the deadliest wildfire in U.S. history in more than a century.

It was also a stark reminder that much of West Maui remains bone dry.

“We lost our business and our home,” Swanson said. “But we are one of the lucky ones.”
