N.J. weather: Risk of ‘significant’ flash flooding increasing in parts of N.J., new Hurricane Henri forecast - NJ.com

Hurricane Henri is bringing increasing concerns of flooding in central and southern New Jersey, the National Weather Service in Mount Holly said Saturday night.

Though the hurricane is not expected to hit New Jersey directly, it will carry a swath of rough weather that will drench the state overnight and into Sunday and could drop as much as 6 inches of rain in the hardest hit places.

In its latest briefing issued just before 7 p.m., the weather service warned of the potential of “significant” flash flooding Saturday night across central and southern New Jersey. A band of heavy rain is expected to sweep the Atlantic City area and move west toward Philadelphia, the forecasters said.

The overnight rainfall could come at rates of 1 to 3 inches an hour.

The weather service also warned of possible tropical force winds in Middlesex and Monmouth counties through Sunday morning that could knock down trees and cut power.

The threat of flooding and heavy rain is expected to expand to the rest of New Jersey on Sunday, tapering off on Sunday night, the weather service said. Expect winds of 30-40 mph, with gusts as high as 60 mph, likely starting Sunday morning and into the afternoon.

Henri was upgraded to a hurricane late Saturday morning. It is slated to make landfall Sunday afternoon in Long Island or southeastern Connecticut before continuing north into Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Utility companies across New Jersey said they are preparing for possible outages caused by the high winds and rain.

“Charge your devices, stay away from downed power lines, and report power outages immediately,” Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted Saturday night.
