Sen. Lindsey Graham said Tuesday night that President Joe Biden “should be impeached” over America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, which the Republican lawmaker called “the most dishonorable thing a commander-in-chief has done in modern times.”
“This is dereliction of duty by the commander-in-chief,” Graham (R-SC) told Fox News’ “Hannity.”
“This makes it harder to fight future wars. Who’s going to help us in the future after we abandoned our friends in Afghanistan who fought bravely?” Graham went on.
“And the likelihood of a 9/11 is through the roof now, because Al Qaeda and ISIS are coming after us. If you believe we’ve left Afghanistan and we’ve ended the war between the US and radical Islam, you’re a fool. They’re coming after us and Joe Biden has left us naked and blind in Afghanistan.”
The senator was responding to Biden’s insistence earlier Tuesday that US forces were currently on pace to complete their evacuation mission by the end of this month. The Taliban, which swiftly retook power in Afghanistan, has called Aug. 31 a “red line” date, beyond which no American troops can remain in the country.
“The sooner we can finish, the better. Each day of operations brings added risk to our troops,” Biden said in remarks from the Roosevelt Room of the White House. “But the completion by August 31st depends upon the Taliban continuing to cooperate and allow access to the airport.”
Graham translated the president’s remarks to mean that “he is going to leave [on the] 31st August because the Taliban told him he had to get out. There is no way in hell we’re going to get all the American citizens out. We’re going to leave thousands of Afghans who fought along outside behind, and we’re setting the table for the rise of Al Qaeda and ISIS to attack us down the road.
“President Biden has signed the death warrant for thousands of Afghans who helped us,” Graham added. “He’s washing his hands of Afghanistan at our peril as a nation.”
Lawmakers from both parties have strongly criticized the execution of the evacuation of thousands of Americans and their Afghan allies from Hamid Karzai International Airport outside the capital city of Kabul. Since the Taliban entered the city Aug. 15, thousands of people have swarmed the airport gates, buildings and tarmacs, trying to get on a flight out by any means necessary — even losing their lives in the attempt.
Earlier Tuesday, Reps. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) and Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) warned after visiting the airport to observe the operation in person that US forces “won’t get everyone out on time,” even if the evacuation deadline is extended to its original date of Sept. 11.
Graham concurred with their assessment, adding that if the administration was sticking to the Aug. 31 deadline, evacuation flights carrying American and Afghan civilians would have to start wrapping up later this week to leave enough time for US forces to leave the country.
“I’ve got 200 [evacuation] cases in my office right now. Ten of them are American citizens. There’s no way we get ‘em all out,” he said. “The operation really ends this weekend. By 31st August, we’re going to have all of our troops out.
“So how do you get to Kabul in these circumstances? The Taliban are not waving you through. So yeah, there’s no way we get all the American citizens out and there’s no way we avoid leaving tens of thousands of Afghans behind.”
