2022 Ford Explorer Lets You Choose More Power, Sportier Looks, or Both - Kelley Blue Book

explorexs.blogspot.com

The Ford Explorer may be the classic midsize family SUV, but classic doesn’t mean Ford can’t change it with the times. For 2022, the Explorer lineup is growing. Shoppers can now choose an Explorer that looks sportier, one that looks and feels sportier, or one that feels like a near-luxury vehicle with all the performance but less of the flash.

Pricing hasn’t yet been revealed. Sticker price on the 2021 Explorer ranges from $32,925 to over $53,000, depending on trim level and options. All Explorers also require a destination fee of $1,245.

New Competition

The Explorer has faced intense competition since its last redesign in 2020. The Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade have won plaudits from reviewers, while Jeep will soon unveil an entirely new Grand Cherokee, with upscale new looks and a plug-in hybrid option.

High-Power Explorer ST Goes Rear-Wheel-Drive

The high-performance Explorer ST is the enthusiast’s version. Its 400-horsepower, twin-turbo V6 is the most powerful engine in the lineup. But it slots in about the middle of the price list and lacks some of the luxuries of more expensive trims. For 2022, the ST sticks around but gets a configuration that appeals to the performance purist: It now comes standard in rear-wheel-drive (RWD). All-wheel-drive (AWD) remains an option.

New Explorer ST-Line Gets Sportier Looks Without the Power

New to the lineup is a model that Ford says is “designed for drivers who favor the performance-inspired appearance of the ST brand but don’t require its full power and capability.” The ST-Line borrows sporty details from the ST, including 20-inch machined aluminum wheels, black grille, smoked head- and taillights, and gloss-black badges. Inside, it adds heated front-row seats, a heated sport steering wheel, and seats upholstered in Miko microfiber with contrast-color stitching.

But it uses the base 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, making 300 horsepower.

While Ford hasn’t revealed other pricing details on the 2022 Explorer lineup, it does say that the ST-Line “comes with a starting MSRP that is $7,570 less than Explorer ST.”

King Ranch, Platinum Models Get the Power Without the Look

The upscale King Ranch and Platinum models, meanwhile, get ST-level power without the exterior tweaks. For the 2021 model year, Ford sold both with a twin-turbo V6 making 365 horsepower. For 2022, they’ll come instead with the ST’s 400-horsepower engine. The move simplifies production for Ford, dropping an engine from the lineup entirely while giving buyers of the most luxurious Explorers more power.

Both trim levels also gain a 10.1-inch touchscreen, Ford’s Multi-Contour massaging front seats, and a 14-speaker B&O sound system as part of their standard equipment list rather than an added-cost option package.
