CX-9 vs. Explorer: Affordable Space

Mazda CX-9

2021 Mazda CX-9 profile

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 is the driver’s choice among 3-row SUVs. The chassis boasts sharp steering, responsive handling, and a composed ride. The sole engine, a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, can be paired with FWD or AWD (the latter standard on the top Signature trim). With up to 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, acceleration is peppy. The tow rating is a bit limited at 3,500 pounds.

The CX-9 is sharply styled outside and richly appointed inside. The third row is tight, though, and behind it is just 14.4 cubic feet of luggage space, expanding to a relatively modest-for-its-size 71.2 cubic feet with all seats folded.

Mazda’s standard driver-assist features include adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. The infotainment system features a 10.25-inch display with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity.

Entry-level Sport models have a second-row bench and seating for seven passengers, while the Carbon Edition and Signature trims get captain’s chairs and seating for six. Touring and Grand Touring models offer a choice of bench or captain’s chairs in the second row.

Even the base trim comes with heated seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, and power driver’s seat. The top two trims get a 360-degree-view camera and navigation, while the Signature boasts Nappa leather with quilted stitching and rosewood trim.

The Ford Explorer is roomy and comes in a 2-2-2 seating configuration in all but the base trim (which gets a 3-passenger middle bench). That means it can carry up to seven passengers. Since the Ford is an American model, it’s made for the American consumer who prefers ample passenger space, and it delivers on that.

The base turbo I4 is economical and has enough grunt with 300 horsepower. Upgrade choices include a 322-horsepower V6 hybrid and a turbo V6 with 365 or 400 horsepower (in the respective Platinum and ST). AWD is standard with the turbo V6 and optional with the others. The RWD hybrid gets 28 mpg combined; the twin-turbo V6 only 20 mpg.

The Explorer offers a more premium driving experience, and the sporty ST is a credible performance SUV. The base, XLT, and Limited get the 2.3-liter, with the Limited also available with the hybrid. The twin-turbo is exclusive to the ST and the Platinum, which also gets a digital instrument cluster and offers the option of a 14-speaker  Bang & Olufsen sound system and a 10.1-inch vertical touchscreen.

An 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Wi-Fi is standard, along with forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Upper trims offer adaptive cruise control and lane centering, power-folding third row, panoramic sunroof, leather, 360-degree-view camera, and more.

Similarities

Handsome styling; 7-passenger seating; available AWD; NHTSA 5-star safety.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Advantages

Fun to drive; lower price; fuel economy; active safety features standard on all trims.

2021 Explorer Advantages

Slightly less thirsty around town and with a lower starting price, the Ford Explorer offers a decent value.
