In her victim statement, which was played via video at Chauvin’s sentencing hearing for the 2020 murder of her father, Gianna Floyd said she still felt his spirit and hoped to play with him again.

“We used to have dinner meals every single night before we went to bed,” she said. “My daddy used to help me brush my teeth.”

Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and half years in prison on Friday after being found guilty on charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Prosecutors requested a 30-year prison sentence.

Gianna Floyd gave the first of four victim statements. George Floyd’s nephew Brandon Williams spoke second, calling Chauvin’s actions a “total disregard of human life.” He requested that the maximum sentence be imposed, a request that his family members echoed in their victim statements.

Terrence Floyd, one of George Floyd’s brothers, had trouble getting his words out as he closed his eyes and took deep breaths at the stand.

“I wanted to know from the man himself, why, what were you thinking? What was going through your head when you had your knee on my brother’s neck?” Terrence Floyd asked Chauvin, who remained silent. “When you knew that he posed no threat anymore, when he was handcuffed, why didn’t you at least get up? Why did you stay there?”

Philonise Floyd, another of George Floyd’s brothers, delivered the final victim statement. “Every day I have begged for justice to be served, reliving the execution of George,” he said, fighting through tears.

After pleading for a maximum sentence to be given to Chauvin, Philonise Floyd said, “My family and I have been given a life sentence. We will never be able to get George back.”
