A black bear is on the lam, again.
Two bears housed at Adirondack Wildlife Refuge in Wilmington escaped on Thursday, according to a statement from the state Department of Environmental Conservation. One bear was recaptured but the second bear remained missing as of Friday morning.
The refuge, owned by wildlife rehabbers Steve and Wendy Hall, posted on its Facebook page Friday that the refuge would be closed for the day “as we continue to try to confirm whether our escaped black bear is on Refuge property still or immediately surrounding the area.”
The refuge had posted on Thursday that the bear, named Ahote, had gone missing after digging out of her enclosure.
This is the second time Ahote has broken out and made a run for it. In 2019, the bear was missing for weeks along with her partner bear, Luve.
The DEC said it is investigating the incident and asked the public to contact both the refuge and DEC if anyone sees the bear. The DEC line is 518-897-1300. The refuge’s number is 914-772-5983.
The DEC said the public should not engage or attempt to approach the bear “as it is a potential threat to public health and safety.” The refuge, in its Facebook post, said Ahote tends to run from people.
