Feds will start paying out new child tax credit on July 15 - New York Post

The White House rolled out a PR campaign to highlight the government’s new expanded child tax credit as part of President Biden’s coronavirus relief plan, which will begin to pay families with children 17 and younger next month.

Families with children under the age of 6 will get a tax credit of $3,600 per child, while the tax credit for children between the ages of 6 and 17 will be $3,000, the White House said in a statement released Monday.

The child tax credit had previously been $2,000 per child.

“This year, a family with two young children would receive a tax cut of $7200, with a monthly payment of $600 starting in July. Almost all families who have filed taxes in the last two years will receive this tax cut automatically,” the statement said.

About 36 million families are expected to start receiving the benefit on July 15.

The credit is available for couples who earn $150,000 or less a year, heads of households who earn $112,500 or less and individuals who earn $75,000 or less.

The administration launched a website — childtaxcredit.gov — that provides recipients with details.

Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Pittsburgh to tout the tax credit that was included in the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan.

“When more families know about the relief that is included in the American Rescue Plan, when more families know about how they can get the relief, that is how we will be able to lift our children out of poverty. That is how we will lift up our nation’s middle class, as well,” she said Monday.

Harris encouraged members of the audience to help get the word out about the tax credit.

Eligible families can receive as much as $3,600 for each child under the age of 6 and $3,000 for children between the ages of 6 and 17.

“We need your help. Whether you are spending some time over the next couple days, you know, at the grocery store or at work or at school or at church – wherever you run into people, perfect strangers, just go on up and introduce yourself and tell them about the Child Tax Credit. Let them know it’s available. Spread the word. Let them know help is here,” she said.

The White House said it has teamed up with child advocate organizations, faith-based agencies, elected officials, and volunteers to reach out to low-income families, including through social media, to talk about the tax credit plan.

“For parents working to make ends meet and raise their children with greater security, dignity, and opportunity, help is here. On this Child Tax Credit Awareness day, let us all work together to make sure that the help that is here reaches those who most need it, this year and for years to come,” Biden said in the statement.

The tax credit plan is expected to expire after one year, but Biden has proposed expanding it.
