A dead body found Tuesday evening in a Jasper motel room is believed to be that of missing 6-year-old Samuel Olson, who was reported missing from his Houston home May 27, according to Houston Police Chief Troy Finner.
One possible suspect is in custody and will be interviewed by Houston police homicide investigators, Finner said. Jasper is located about 130 miles northeast of Houston.
"More details will be provided at a news briefing tomorrow," Finner said. "I ask the entire Houston community to join HPD in sending prayers for Samuel and his family."
The person who initially reported the child missing told police that Olson was taken from his southeast Houston home on May 27 by an unknown male. On Monday, Houston police Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite said police had yet to verify the credibility of that report. He said the last confirmed sighting of Olson was April 30 at his school.
It's possible the child has been missing since then, Satterwhite said, adding that none of the family members who spoke to investigators knew his whereabouts.
He said the mother and father shared custody of the child.
“We’re trying to move with as much urgency as we can to get him back safely,” he said on Monday. “We’re still not where we need to be in terms of locating him.”
