Palisade vs. Explorer: Family Favorites Face-Off
Hyundai Palisade
The 2021 Palisade comes with an ample feature set that puts it up against other vehicles in the midsize SUV space like the Honda Pilot, Volkswagen Atlas, and its corporate sibling, the Kia Telluride. The Palisade uses a 3.8-liter V6 engine that puts out 291 horsepower and 262 lb. ft. of torque, which is plenty for merging comfortably onto quick-moving highways.
While we noticed some wind noise at higher speeds, the Palisade is comfortable and quiet on the road and has ample cabin space for passengers and their cargo. The third-row seats offer enough space for an adult to sit comfortably. The second-row slides with the touch of a button so passengers can get in the back without having to perform gymnastics.
The rear bench offers power operation so that should you need more cargo space, you can tuck the seats away quickly without having to fight with them. In models equipped with second-row captain’s chairs, the passenger count drops to seven.
The Palisade’s list of standard driver and safety assists include adaptive cruise control with stop/go function, lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and seven airbags, including one for the driver’s knees.
The interior of the Palisade is full of quality materials that make it feel luxe. The cabin is functional and offers tons of storage nooks and crannies, including an innovative area below the center console. It also comes at its base with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Around town, the Palisade gets 19 mpg.
Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer is roomy and comes in a 2-2-2 seating configuration in all but the base trim (which gets a 3-passenger middle bench). That means it can carry up to seven passengers, but most models are meant for six. Since the Ford is an American model, it’s made for the American consumer who prefers ample passenger space, and it delivers on that.
The base turbo 4-cylinder engine is economical and has enough grunt with 300 horsepower. Upgrade choices are a 322-horsepower V6 hybrid and a turbo V6 with 365 or 400 horsepower (in the respective Platinum and ST). All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard with the turbo V6 and optional with the others. The rear-wheel-drive (RWD) hybrid gets 28 mpg combined; the twin-turbo V6 only 20 mpg.
The Explorer offers a more premium driving experience, and the sporty ST is a credible performance SUV. The base XLT and Limited get the 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine, with the Limited also available with the hybrid. The twin-turbo V6 is exclusive to the ST and the Platinum. That latter top-end trim also gets a digital instrument cluster and offers the option of a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and a 10.1-inch vertical touchscreen. An 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Wi-Fi is standard.
The Ford Explorer also comes with forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Upper trims offer adaptive cruise control and lane centering, a power-folding third row, panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, a 360-degree-view camera, and more.
