Anyone following the latest Ford news on Ford Authority may remember that the overhauled Ford Explorer became quite a bit more expensive than the 2019 model. Ford lowered prices for the 2021 model year, splitting out a lot of standard features and content into optional packages in a bid to reduce the perceived price of the three-row crossover. And now, Ford Authority has learned that The Blue Oval is raising prices mid-way into the 2021 model year.

Most trims and one package of the 2021 Explorer become more costly going forward. In fact, the new pricing structure will take effect on February 24th, 2021.

Updated 2021 Ford Explorer Pricing (Feb 24, 2021)
Trim Level Original Price New Price
Base $32,225 $32,450
XLT $34,000 $34,225
Limited $45,005 $45,005
ST $52,605 $52,830
Platinum $54,480 $54,480

As you can see, the prices increases for the 2021 Ford Explorer are not across the board, as the Limited and Platinum trims will set shoppers back just as much as they did before.

Either way, Ford also raised the price of the Premium Technology Package by $300 to $1,295. Formerly priced at $900, the package is optional on ST and Platinum and includes the following equipment:

  • Multicontour Seats with Active Motion
  • 10.1-inch LCD capacitive portrait touchscreen in center stack with swipe and pinch-to-zoom capability
  • B&O sound system by Bang & Olufsen with 980 watts and 14 speakers

Incentives remain attractive on the Explorer, as The Blue Oval recently slapped about $5,000 of incentives on 2021 examples in certain markets, with remaining 2020 models receiving an additional $2,000 off, depending on the region.

That said, shoppers may want to hold off on buying a 2021 Ford Explorer for now, as two highly distinctive trims are set to make their debut in the near future. As first reported by Ford Authority, the Explorer King Ranch is expected to join the lineup in the very near future. Additionally, Ford seems poised to expand the Explorer lineup with an off-road oriented Timberline model down the road, although it currently isn’t clear when the latter model will arrive.

The Explorer is selling well and continues to be the reigning champ of the three-row crossover segment. Last month, sales increased 11.1 percent to 18,095 units, as customers continued to view it as a compelling option for their needs.
