Explorer vs. Edge: A Question of Space
Ford Explorer
If there’s one thing the 2022 Ford Explorer offers, it’s variety. Three powertrain choices include a capable turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 400-hp twin-turbo V6, and a hybrid V6. Trim choices are equally comprehensive, with options for captain’s chairs in the second row (reducing seating capacity to six), the off-road-ready Timberline version, and the luxurious and expensive Platinum trim.
One way the Explorer differentiates itself is with three rows of seating for seven passengers, although as is common with midsize SUVs, the third row is really best for smaller children, due to its relatively tight legroom. The XLT trim offers captain’s chairs for the second row, which reduces capacity to six. The cabin is comfortable and quiet, although neither the exterior nor the interior design is terribly exciting. Upper trims add such things as red stitching, simulated suede, and of course full leather in the top King Ranch and Platinum trims.
Even the base turbocharged 4-cylinder is good, with its 300 horsepower offering plenty to keep the Explorer moving, but the twin-turbo V6 in the ST is the one people will be talking about. It’s quick and powerful, with a sport-tuned suspension, optional 21-inch alloys, and stronger brakes. A Timberline version boasts all-terrain tires, standard all-wheel drive, limited-slip rear differential, raised suspension, and skidplates.
Standard features include keyless ignition, tri-zone climate control, and an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, as well as the Co-Pilot360 suite of driver assistance features. Infotainment is via an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, WiFi, Bluetooth, USB ports, satellite radio, and six-speaker audio system. Higher trims add more luxury touches, but prices can climb to nearly $60,000.
Ford Edge
Unlike a lot of midsize SUVs that try to jam in three rows of seats, the 2022 Ford Edge makes do with just two. This creates plenty of space for all five passengers, and its small size makes it a lot of fun to drive.
The base 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is spunky, and standard all-wheel drive gives it added grip in all weather conditions. As in the Explorer, it also offers a high-performance ST variant, this one powered by a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6. The ST also includes an optional sport-tuned suspension and grippy tires for more driving fun.
Inside, at least in the base trim, the Edge is a little plain, and the quality could be better. Space is good, including plentiful legroom, but there’s nothing particularly special about it. Upper trims improve a bit with such things as leather seats, satin accents, and ambient lighting. Cargo space is about average for a midsize crossover, holding 73.4 cubic feet when all seats are folded down.
Standard features are plentiful and include 18-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats. Infotainment comes via a 12-inch vertical screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, WiFi capability, and a 6-speaker audio system. Safety features come via the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite and include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, pre-collision assist, and a back-up camera.
Upper trims include the 400-hp V6, leather seating, and a premium stereo in the Titanium trim, and an Adventure package that adds more of an off-road vibe without actually improving the Edge’s ability.
