The newest Cal Fire operations map released early Wednesday morning gives a sense of where the Caldor Fire is in relation to landmarks like Heavenly, Kirkwood and the city of South Lake Tahoe.
Overnight, the fire crossed the 200,000 acre mark and continued to burn parallel to Pioneer Trail up toward the state line, but there was mostly good news for the Tahoe Basin.
"We're fortunate the fire did not make as strong a push into Tahoe as it did the previous day," Cal Fire operations section chief Tim Ernst said. "A lot of great work is being done here along Highway 50 moving down into the basin."
You can see a full-size version of the map here, although it can be a bit tricky to read as the map is topographical rather than a street-by-street view. The map is updated once per day, so real-time fire lines can shift significantly. Hot spots do not mean those entire swaths are actively burning, simply that some heat signatures have been detected in the area.

The eastern side of Meyers has now been reinforced by a long dozer line; fire crews use bulldozers to rip up the soil and create moat-like fire breaks around structures. The map designates dozer lines with black X's. The northeastern tip of the fire is now near Trimmers Peak, with the blaze moving down toward Heavenly ski resort. There also continue to be concerns near Kirkwood.
"One of our major concerns is the Kirkwood bowl area, where the Kirkwood ski area is," Ernst said. "The fire is currently hung up on the ridge right outside of Kirkwood, so that's something we'll be looking at today as one of our priorities."
You can also use this interactive map from Fire Mappers to get a sense of where the fire is burning. This is not an evacuation map. For that, you should look to county agencies. (Note: The map can sometimes be slow to load. If you don't see the Tahoe area render right away, wait a bit longer.)
Cal Fire meteorologist Jim Dudley cautioned crews this morning to expect "swirly, gusty winds" all day near Kirkwood and Heavenly. A red flag warning for the area is set to expire at 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Ernst said aerial surveillance showed things are looking "really good" from Division H to Division P, which covers the territory from about Alder Ridge to the edge of Leek Springs. The fire did continue to push north toward Wrights Lake, where today crews hope to place more dozer lines.
