Police use photo to arrest man in stolen Explorer case - Automotive News

A man accused of using a stolen identity to buy a $58,000 Explorer from a Ford dealership in Missouri left behind a pretty big clue that helped police track him down without much trouble.

Before he drove away last summer from Thoroughbred Ford with his new purchase, the crook took the time to pose for a photo so the dealership could add him to its collection of satisfied customers.

The Kansas City Police Department went back to the case last week and posted the photo on its Twitter account, asking for tips from anyone who recognized him. Eleven minutes later, the department shared an update: "We have already identified the suspect! Turns out he is in custody already on the Kansas side on different charges."

The request for help also garnered a handful of replies from people who were taken aback not only by the thief's mistake but also that a new Explorer can cost $58,000.

"Had no idea the new models were in that kind of price range," one commenter wrote. "I'm chillin in my $8,000 2020 Ford Fusion though."
