A majority of Republicans who have followed the developments that led to Rep. The CBS News-YouGov poll found 80 percent of Republicans who've heard of her removal indicated Cheney deserved it, describing her as "off-message, unsupportive of Mr. Trump, and that she's wrong about the 2020 presidential election." 

Of the Republicans who agreed with her removal, 69 percent said their biggest gripe with Cheney is that "she's not on message with my party." Another 34 percent indicated they are pleased that GOP leadership has sent a message to its rank and file lawmakers that "disloyalty will be punished."

Since the months that have followed the Jan. 6 rioting by Trump's supporters at the U.S. Capitol, Cheney has been critical of the former president and the wing of the GOP that is supportive of him, his policies and unproven claims of voter fraud. 

"It's my responsibility as an elected official, it's my responsibility as a leader, to lead and to tell the truth," Cheney said Sunday during an appearance on ABC's "This Week."

Before scheduling a vote to oust Cheney from her job as House GOP conference chair, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said he and other members of House leadership were concerned Cheney's statements about Trump and the 2020 election could impede her ability to successfully carry out her job. 

“There's no concern about how she voted on impeachment. That decision has been made. I have heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair — to carry out the message,” McCarthy said earlier this month. "We all need to be working as one if we're able to win the majority. Remember, majorities are not given; they are earned. And that's about the message about going forward."

On Sunday, Cheney acknowledged her views are not in line with the majority of GOP voters. 

"I know that there are many members who have expressed concern about their own security. And I think that's an important point to think about as well, that we now live in a country where members' votes are affected because they're worried about their security, they're worried about threats on their lives," she said before adding: "The majority of the Republican Party is not where I am." 

The CBS News poll was conducted among 951 Republicans from May 12 to 14. It has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
