Gavin Newsom makes misleading claim about Florida and California's COVID-19 stats - SFGate

After joining ABC's "The View" on Tuesday morning, California Gov. Gavin Newsom continued his "please don't recall me" media tour with an appearance on CNN's "The Lead With Jake Tapper" a few hours later.

Unlike on "The View," where one question for the governor was prefaced with, "I think you've done a pretty damn good job," Tapper immediately pressed Newsom on the Democratic Party's talking points regarding the recall efforts.

Newsom allies both inside and outside California have worked hard to tie the recall to right-wing extremism, but Tapper pushed back by asking Newsom, "Certainly, all 2 million Californians who signed this aren't all Trumpsters, I mean, we have interviewed people who were supporters of yours who are now supporting the recall effort in large part, at least according to anecdotally the interviews our reporters on the ground are doing, because they think the measures you took were too harsh, too aggressive."

"I respect that," Newsom said. "It's been a difficult year. In hindsight, we're all experts. The reality is it was about a year ago, was a year ago this week California was the first state to initiate a stay-at-home order. I think we saved thousands and thousands of lives."

Tapper later pressed Newsom on California having the second-highest unemployment rate in the country, and asked if he believes any of his restrictions "went too far" or were "too tough." The governor did not answer directly.

"Well, we have 1.8% positivity today, that's lower than all but three states in the country," he said. "We have lower death rates than the vast majority of states this country, certainly much lower than places like Florida and Texas. I believe we've saved lives. We're led by science, we're lead by health, led by data."

While California did have lower death rates than most of the country ahead of the winter surge, when ranked from highest to lowest, it places 28th among 50 states with 143 COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 residents. For reference, Florida ranks 27th with 151, and Texas ranks 24th with 161.

Both the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press have published stories in recent weeks on California and Florida having similar death-per-capita numbers despite taking different approaches to the pandemic. Some have questioned whether Newsom's winter stay-at-home order and previous restrictions exacerbated the holiday surge.

Tapper also asked Newsom about the state's unemployment fraud scandal and vaccine allocations later in the interview. You can watch the full interview in the videos above.
