When the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer launched, one of its many new features included a set of Michelin Selfseal tires lined with a sealant that is designed to fill most common tread punctures, such as those caused by nails and screws. The tires dramatically slow the rate at which air leaks in the event of a puncture thanks to an integrated sealant made from natural rubber. However, 2021 Ford Explorer self-sealing tire availability has changed a bit from the previous model year.
The Explorer self-sealing tire is no longer standard equipment on Platinum models and is no longer available on the ST as an option. Instead, both of these trims now come standard with all-season tires. The self-sealing tires are newly available on XLT trim Explorers as a standalone option, but to get them, buyers must opt for the XLT Sport Appearance Package. Finally, the Michelin Selfseal tires are also optional on Limited trim and standard on Limited Hybrid trimmed Explorers.
Previously, the self-sealing tires came standard on the 2020 Ford Explorer Platinum and Explorer Limited Hybrid four-wheel-drive models and were optional on Explorer Limited two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive models.
In addition to this change, the 2021 Ford Explorer also received a modest price increase for most trims, as we previously reported. Ford recently revealed the all-new Explorer King Ranch, which will be joined in the 2021 Explorer lineup soon by the more off-road-focused Timberline.
Additionally, Ford just rolled out a series of dealer-installed, bundled roof packages for the 2021 Ford Explorer dubbed “Outfitters,” which consist of three distinctive options – Cargo – Skybox, Cargo – MegaWarrior, and Bike – FrontLoader. The Outfitters packages are just the latest in Ford’s push to expand its accessories offerings after the automaker first teamed up with Yakima to offer a full line of roof racks and storage solutions for the 2020 Explorer when it launched.
