Eco explorer yacht specialist Arksen has completed the sale of its first Arksen 85 explorer vessel.
Construction began last September under the name Project Ocean at the Isle of Wight based Wight Shipyard Company (WSC), and is the first unit in Arksen's 26.2 metre hybrid explorer series.
Arksen also announced that construction will begin on a second hull in April with delivery scheduled for late 2022, and a third unit will enter production later this year for delivery in early 2023.
Arksen's 85 autonomous hybrid explorer series has been designed by naval architects Humphreys Yacht Design and interior design firm Design Unlimited. The hull and superstructure will be constructed from recycled aluminium capable of being recycled again at the end of the vessel's life.
Arksen estimates the build to take around 18 months, after which Project Ocean will begin sea trials. Delivery is scheduled for spring 2022 after which a large portion of Project Ocean's sea time will be dedicated to the Arksen Foundation fo research and conservation work.
To meet the client brief for a family home on the ocean, the team at Design Unlimited have developed a custom interior that blends comfort with the practicalities necessary for successful long-range cruising.
"By working closely with the owners on materials and details, we have developed an eclectic and comfortable interior that takes inspiration from boutique hotels and Nordic landscapes. These influences have been implemented through the use of timbers, textured fabrics and brass hardware." Mark Tucker, Creative Director of Design Unlimited.
Enabling guests to take in their surroundings, the vessel features near-uninterrupted panoramic views from the main saloon and bridge deck. The lower deck accomodates up to 10 in four en-suite cabins, including a full-beam owner’s cabin with a multi-purpose snug and library for remote working. The interior will even use a range of recycled and sustainable materials, with soft furnishings even using recycled plastic bottles.
Co-Director of Humphreys Yacht Design, Tom Humphreys, said: “Arksen’s dedication to researching and understanding our impact on the environment will be invaluable in helping to re-shape the development of leisure-vessel production in the motor yacht sector.”
Design Unlimited creative director, Mark Tucker, said: “The Design Unlimited studio have created an interior that is dynamic, functional, attractive and sustainable in both the materials used and in its on-going functionality and versatility of use.”
Project Ocean will be powered by a full hybrid propulsion package for a top speed of 14 knots and cruising speed of 9-11 knots, providing a range of up to 7000 nautical miles.
Project Ocean will also be equipped with solar energy capabilities providing up to 7kW of zero-carbon electrical power.
Arksen founder Jasper Smith said Project Ocean beginning construction "is a big milestone in our journey".
He added: “We have been working closely with all our partners to design and build a vessel to be the best in class in efficiency and fuel economy.”
The Arksen 85 is the flagship of the fledgling builder's fleet, which also includes the Arksen 60 and Arksen 75. Larger models are also in the pipeline.
