HOUSTON – Three people were killed and another person was injured when part of a building stairwell collapsed Monday in west Houston, according to officials from the Houston Fire Department.
The collapse was reported at a construction site on Town and Country Boulevard in the area of City Centre near Interstate 10 and Beltway 8.
A worker at the site shared images with KPRC 2 in which it appeared that a stairwell in the building collapsed. According to Houston Fire Department Capt. Ruy Lozano, the collapse began in the stairwell near the 13th and 14th floor. Lozano described the collapse as a pancake-style collapse, falling all the way to the first floor.
A worker at the scene said he was on the ground floor when the collapse happened.
“Out of nowhere, I hear a loud banging sound,” the worker said. “It sounded like a building was collapsing, which, I checked out, it didn’t happen, but all I saw was the parking building ... we’re very close to the parking building. All you see is a bunch of smoke.”
Authorities said the injured person has been taken to a hospital for treatment. As of 4 p.m., the bodies of three victims who were killed in the collapse were not yet recovered.
Lozano said engineers are on the scene and evaluating to see if and when it’ll be safe to begin recovering the three deceased. Officials said it could take days. Houston police and crime scene detectives are at the scene investigating because of the fatalities.
The building appears to be part of the One MRO project announced earlier this year by Marathon Oil.
