Congressman. McClintock requests State of Emergency declaration for Tamarack Fire - SF Gate

Congressman Tom McClintock has requested a State of Emergency declaration for the Tamarack Fire currently burning along the California-Nevada border.

The Tamarack Fire is currently 58,417 acres and just 4% contained. It began as a lightning strike in the Mokelumne Wilderness along a rocky ridgetop with "sparse fuels and natural barriers to fire spread," Cal Fire said.

In his letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom, McClintock noted that the fire has "exceeded 58,000 acres with little containment."

He said that "the fire is devastating in Alpine County, forcing evacuations, damaging property, and threatening infrastructure."

McClintock noted that the region's major economic assets are its public lands, recreational opportunities and seasonal events "that have already been canceled due to the Tamarack Fire."

"As such," he wrote, "a State of Emergency declaration is critical to ensuring resources are swiftly deployed to respond to this devastating wildfire."

McClintock ended by asking Newsom to declare a State of Emergency and ensure that he does "everything" in his power to "provide assistance to the communities" impacted.

In recent days, crews have tried to prevent the blaze that's straddling the California-Nevada state line from crossing the Highway 395 corridor, but on Thursday afternoon, the fire that's burning south of Lake Tahoe exploded.

"Aerial resources estimate the spot about 2,500 acres as of 4:10pm," the incident management team said in Facebook post. "Firefighters and aircraft continue to battle under exceptionally difficult weather & fuel conditions."

The Tamarack Fire ignited in Alpine County near Markleeville, California and exploded in size last week as strong winds fanned flames eating up a parched landscape. Flames crossed into Nevada this week, the U.S. Fire Service said.

The fire is burning across a landscape that's bone-dry after two consecutive dry winters.

"As always, the concern is the continued warm, dry, windy weather, and that really is and has been the driving factor when it comes to the fire activity — especially when those winds line up with the terrain," Tracy LeClair, a spokeperson for the incident management team, said.
