Explorer vs. Durango: Choose your flavor of American SUV
Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer is roomy, with seating in a 2-2-2 configuration in all but the base trim (which gets a 3-passenger middle bench). That means it offers seating for up to seven passengers. Since the Ford is an American model, it’s made for the American consumer who prefers ample passenger space, and it delivers on that. The base 2.3-liter turbo I4 is economical and has enough grunt with 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. Upgrade choices are a 322-hp V6 hybrid and a twin-turbo V6 with 365 or 400 horsepower (in the Platinum and ST, respectively). AWD is standard with the turbo V6 and optional with the others. The RWD hybrid delivers 28 mpg combined; the twin-turbo V6 only 20 mpg.
This latest-generation Explorer offers a more premium driving experience, and the sporty ST is a credible high-performance SUV. The base, XLT, and Limited get the 2.3-liter, with the Limited also available with the hybrid. The twin-turbo is exclusive to the ST and the Platinum, which also gets a digital instrument cluster and offers the option of a 14-speaker 980-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system and a 10.1-inch vertical touchscreen. An 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Wi-Fi is standard, along with forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Upper trims offer adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centering, a power-folding third row, a panoramic sunroof, leather, a 360-degree-view camera, and more.
Dodge Durango
The Dodge Durango goes from mild to wild, especially with the addition of the SRT Hellcat with its 710-horsepower supercharged V8. Just below it sits the SRT 392 with a 6.4-liter V8 making 475 horsepower. Both also have upgraded chassis components, including AWD, extra-large brakes, and a sporty suspension tune with adaptive damping. Non-SRT Durangos come with either a 3.6-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter V8 in RWD or AWD. The latter can be had with a 2-speed transfer case and 8.1 inches of ground clearance that lets the Durango roam off the pavement.
A third-row seat is optional on the base trim and standard elsewhere. With it, the Durango can seat six or seven. New 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment on higher trims includes navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. However, common driver assists are standard only on the Citadel trim.
Similarities
Both skew toward the larger end of the midsize spectrum and have better-than-average cargo space. Neither one gets great fuel economy, though.
2021 Ford Explorer Advantages
Available hybrid; roomier third row; fresh design.
2021 Dodge Durango Advantages
Blistering high-performance variants; three V8 engine options; serious towing capacity; available off-road hardware.
Final Recommendation
We like the Durango for its many choices including its high-performance V8s. But in this head-to-head, we’d opt for the Ford for its fresher design and safety suite of features available across the brand. The Ford infotainment system is also a bit more robust. Plus if you want a hybrid, the Explorer comes in that flavor.
