Protesters at Saturday's "Million MAGA March" in Washington, D.C. chanted "fake news" during a report on the event by MSNBC's Ellison Barber.
Speaking to MSNBC anchor Alex Witt, Barber described the scene. As she started to explain that the "Million MAGA March" was organized by several groups, she was interrupted by chanting.
"We started seeing posts on social media—it seemed to originate with a group known as the Proud Boys saying that they wanted people to come out to this rally. If that name sounds familiar to you, it's because President Trump mentioned them in the first presidential debate. They are a far-right extremist group; we saw dozens of them gathered near us just before this live shot," Barber said, before the chanting started.
"The crowd here is chanting 'fake news, fake news.' Not fans of ours as you can tell—which is fine, as long as they give us a little bit of space," she added. "It's hostile here, at least for us. They're following us and chasing us as we walk further back."
Newsweek reached out to MSNBC for comment.
The "Million MAGA March," as it has been dubbed, borrows its name from the 1995 "Million Man March" of Black men on Washington, D.C. Saturday's march is part of a number of events scheduled to take place at the Freedom Plaza. The planned events include a "Stop the Steal" protest and a "March for Trump," referring to President Donald Trump's claims that the election was rife with fraud keeping the president from winning reelection. Trump's claims have been made without evidence.
In addition to the Proud Boys—a group that the legal advocacy organization, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), deems a hate group—the Oath Keepers and Three Percenters are also expected to have a large presence. The SPLC has described both of these groups as "antigovernment militias." Speakers include the Congresswoman-elect Marjorie Taylor-Greene, who has publicly supported the QAnon conspiracy theory, as well as far-right figures Mike Cernovich and Jack Posobiec.
Trump suggested on Friday that he might make an appearance at the event, tweeting, "Heartwarming to see all of the tremendous support out there, especially the organic Rallies that are springing up all over the Country, including a big one on Saturday in D.C. I may even try to stop by and say hello. This Election was Rigged, from Dominion all the way up & down!"
Trump did send his motorcade through the crowd to cheers and applause, but he did not stop or speak at the event. The president also retweeted a video of the demonstrators singing the national anthem, saying "We will WIN!"
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany tweeted that a million people had turned out for the "Million MAGA March," however, local officials estimate that the number was closer to one thousand.
