Woman accused of mailing ricin to Trump also may have targeted Texas law enforcement - New York Post

A woman accused of sending a letter containing ricin to President Trump is also suspected of mailing the highly potent poison to law enforcement agencies in Texas, sources close to the matter said Monday.

The woman, who was not identified prior to her initial court appearance, was taken into custody Sunday by US Customs and Border Protection agents at the Peace Bridge border crossing near Buffalo, New York. She was expected to appear in federal court Tuesday in Buffalo to face charges, three law enforcement officials told the Associated Press.

The letter, which appeared to have been sent from Canada, was intercepted last week at a government facility that screens mail addressed to the White House and Trump.

Two tests later confirmed it tested positive for ricin, a highly toxic substance that can kill adults in doses as small as 500 micrograms, CNN reports.

Now it has emerged that envelopes containing the deadly poison were also sent to law enforcement agencies in the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press, adding that they believe they were mailed by the same person who targeted the White House.

The other agencies allegedly targeted by the suspect in south Texas were not immediately identified.

Investigators from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Quebec, meanwhile, carried out a raid early Monday in connection with the investigation, the CBC reports.

“Our Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives (CBRNE) team is leading the operation,” the agency confirmed in a tweet. “All necessary measures have been taken to ensure public safety.”

An RCMP spokesperson told CNN the agency was working with FBI officials to investigate the letter, which was mailed from St. Hubert, Quebec, before it was intercepted last week.

The woman was carrying a gun when she was taken into custody as she tried to enter the US from Canada, CNN reports.
