A house which once belonged to polar explorer Dr Edward Wilson, a fallen hero of Captain Scott's Antarctic expedition, has just gone on the market for £985,000 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
Hillcrest is charming 1870s Tudor-style semi-detached property with heaps of history. Inside, you'll find four spacious bedrooms, a grand reception hall, drawing room, a family bathroom, beautiful kitchen and gorgeous gardens with a pond.
The renowned explorer, ornithologist and natural historian was one of the first medical doctors to reach the South Pole. Sadly, he and Captain Scott passed away while returning from the South Pole in March 1912.
The beautiful property — which Edward called a 'little piece of heaven' — has been split in two since he lived there, creating two large family homes. Hillcrest is one half and has a blue plaque to commemorate his life and pioneering work.
Some of our favourite arresting features include the original staircase, mosaic tiled flooring, vaulted ceilings, the fireplace in the reception room, claw-foot bathtub and large wooden doors. If you're after a property with heaps of character and glorious views, then Hillcrest is just for you.
The garden is incredibly pretty, even to just look at from the window. There's an impressive pond teeming with colourful fish, swans and beautiful birds cooling off, plus a large lawn, mature shrubs and a raised patio area for alfresco dinners.

The home is situated on the upper slopes of Leckhampton Hill — a peaceful slice of countryside paradise. Your nearest town is three miles away, but it has everything you need including high street stores, bespoke boutiques, restaurants, wine bars and world-famous private schools.
Current owner, Rhian Cooper, purchased the home back in 2002. He says: 'You're so close to Cheltenham - it's only a couple of minutes drive away - and yet it feels so rural. We are at the top of a dead end lane and there is no through road. It's a tree-lined drive and as you come up to the top of the hill and take in the view, you feel like you have arrived.'
Vikki Bennett, a spokesperson for OnTheMarket, added: 'This lovely family home, complete with a beautiful setting and a fascinating link to the past, is sure to become a little piece of heaven for its next owner.'
