Stephen Hawking’s former nurse has been struck off after a panel ruled that she had failed to give the celebrated physicist the “care he deserved”.
Patricia Dowdy, 61, had faced multiple misconduct charges, including financial misconduct, dishonesty, not providing appropriate care, failing to co-operate with the nursing watchdog and not having correct qualifications.
Yesterday, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) found that Mrs Dowdy “failed to provide the standards of good, professional care that we expect and Professor Hawking deserved”.
The investigation was prompted by a complaint from the late scientist’s three children, Lucy, Robert and Timothy. Mrs Dowdy had worked for Hawking between 1999 and 2004 and was employed again from July 2013 until she was suspended in March 2016.
